Guest attendance clothing etiquette

Back in the day (20 yrs ago), clothing etiquette was not something that needed to be discussed for events and weddings, however, more and more as we as a nation become more casual the rules seemed to have blurred a lot.  Please be aware that at no time for a wedding is excessive cleavage any of your bits and pieces showing ok for guests or staff. So here is the honest truth and what you need to be aware of based upon the time of day and what the invitation says.

Any event or wedding after 6 pm is formal / black tie, regardless of it being a vintage or country theme unless stated otherwise on the invitation.  If it is not written on the invitation or RSVP and you’re not sure ask the person hosting the occasion if you’re still unsure.

Any event or wedding mid-day is semi-formal.  What does that mean?  Lace & sequins are not needed, but you should be in at least a cocktail length dress or skirt and a little shine.  A jacket is not required, but a tie is.

An event or wedding in the morning is casual.  If you’re American, casual does not need any explanation.
