7 Costly Mistakes made by brides & how to avoid them

This week I'm so excited to share some great news about what is going on in my life and with A Memory Lane Event with all of you!

Not only have I started training some great new interns that want to learn through hands on experience in the hospitality industry which is my fav, but we've developed some fantastic new products that we will be sharing with all of you starting in January.

work every day with my super talented mother and daughter
My 19 year old daughter while still working with us, is in college following her dream to be a director of a child care center and my mother, is finally working with us as of June this year.  I'm so thrilled to be able to work every day with my super talented mother and daughter.  It's like a dream come true. This just doubled the amount of great talent that you had in A Memory Lane Event luxury planning, coordinating, custom decor & floral design. I can hardly wait to start 2011's event & wedding season!

Great Country Clubs in Colorado
We were at the Garden of the God's Country Club this past week for their bridal show. Such a great location, the possibilities are endless there to really create an amazing completely customized event or wedding & I love working with Country Clubs especially since it's in the Country Clubs where I did the bulk of my training.

Luxury Wedding Dresses for the Voluptuous
We've have teamed up with a custom luxury wedding dress designer in Colorado Springs for our voluptuous brides.  It's such a blessing .... I've always felt disappointed when we have had to in the past settle and send away for a dress that our bride can't try on because bridal stores don't carry a dress in their size.  Let's face it...not all of us can be a size 2, but we're all still beautiful.

P.S.  This January we will be launching our quarterly Wedding Planning 101 class.  This class is for the couple that feels that they want to plan the entire wedding on their own and knows that they need some help from the professionals or feels that they can't afford the planning & coordinating team of their dreams and still wants to have access to their knowledge.

You'll be able to sign up for this 5 hour crash course to get the information on what to look for, what to avoid and how to truly customize your wedding within your budget with group and one on one access to me.  What other professional luxury wedding planner do you know with 21 years of hands on experience and 80,000 custom luxury events and weddings successfully executed that is willing to give you the secrets that you need to truly make your wedding of your dreams at a price you can afford?   You'll have the time to be able ask all of the questions that you're struggling with and get the answers you need.

Better yet, you can afford it because with this group class, you get 5 hours of professional assistance for only $34.99 per person! This not just a  deal....it's a steal!   To hold the class, we need 20 overwhelmed and struggling brides just like you because with this # of brides, what you may not have thought of as a question yet, someone else may already be struggling with.  This means that as a group you'll get more information than you would on your own.  Class will be held on 1/8/2011 in the Denver Metro Area.  Make sure that you Register now

P.S.S. Our Military Wedding Giveaway Contest entry period is almost over.  There's only 3 weeks left to get registered to win a wedding valued at $58,000 where everything from the dress and rings through the honey moon is provided to our winning service person and their finance. A Memory Lane Event and 30 other luxury vendors across Denver want to say a big Thank You to those serving and this is the best way we could think of accomplishing that.

Entering is easy....just record a 1-3 minute video as to what attributes from your grandparents marriage you want to have apparent in your own or what attributes do you feel will ensure a long marriage and of course why you deserve to win, put the video up on U-Tube then go to our website and fill in the application and cut & paste your video's URL.  The contest is open to all military personnel desiring to wed on President’s Day, February 21, 2011 in Denver CO immediately followed by a Colorado mountain honeymoon.   Enter the contest here.

Where can you find A Memory Lane Event? Of course you can find us in and throughout  Denver we're at several networking events through out the month.
We keep our Google calender visible so you can see where we are.

What makes A Memory Lane Event different from other Event & Wedding Planners & Coordinators?

We not only completely plan your event or wedding with you as a team, listening to you and your vision for the day, but our custom designers will assist you in making sure that you are reflected in every element of the day.  Isn’t that what you’re dreaming of…an event or wedding that is completely customized to you?  We’re also a multi-generational family owned and operated company in Denver Colorado serving all of Colorado and any US or International destination.

What does this mean to you, we have three generations assisting you with ideas and concepts for every age of your guests.
Jennifer started planning events at a mid-range restaurant as the night manager at the age of 16.  While still in high school she also attended and excelled at Red Rocks in their interior design classes.  At the age of 18 Jennifer started working in one of Denver’s premier Country Clubs in the catering department.  In this position she really honed in on her skills and knowledge of how long it really takes to set up or turn a room for an amazing event, how long it takes to plate up a buffet or sit down dinner, what it takes to serve a group of guests, space requirements, décor elements and install and so much more.   Within a couple years, she was promoted to assistant to the head of the catering and sales departments in the Country Club.  In this position she learned sales for the location, developed relationships with high quality vendors in Denver and throughout Colorado, staffing needs, scheduling, time lines, organizing and how to really listen to a client.  As well as assisting in planning and coordinating thousands of high end events and weddings, many times several hundred at a time with multiple occurring on the same day and time.  Jennifer has planned and coordinated high style custom events and weddings for Denver’s elite such as the Broncos, both John and Janet Elway, the Av’s and many more in their homes and in hot spots across the US and Internationally.  She’s experienced in everything from small intimate gatherings of 6 people to a few thousand of your closest friends.  She and her team have successfully executed custom and quality golf tournaments, fundraisers, corporate events, haunted houses, elaborate weddings and more to the tune of 80,000 over the last 21 years.

7 costly mistakes made by brides when planning their custom wedding & how to avoid them

1.  Not realizing that every one person that is invited to your wedding increases the cost of the wedding by an average of $150.

2.  Not reading the fine print such as when payments are due to the location and vendors, if and how much insurance is needed to use a facility.  Read the fine print, if this isn't your strong point, hire someone who has this attribute as a strong point.

3. Not true to yourself and trying to make everyone else happy ...ultimately sacrificing their happiness.  It's your wedding, you and your finance should be the focal point,it's more of a challenge when parents and grandparents are kicking in funds, and it's totally possible to have your wedding reflect the two of you and still be able to make those close to you feel involved.

4. Having too big of a bridal party .  You pay for everyone's flowers and food, then there's the gift for being in your wedding party.   A bouquet for a wedding on average is $75 ea.  For every 50 guests you should have an attendant. We know it's sometimes difficult to narrow down who will serve in your bridal party and you don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, however being aware in advance what the costs are before picking your bridal party is helpful.

5. Backyard verses a hall or wedding venue .  Backyard weddings aren't always cost saving...why you have to bring in & rent tables, chairs, tablecloths, dance floor, lighting if it's at night than there is delivery and staff to set up and take down, rental of plates, glass and flat ware, it all adds and in most cases halls and venues, throw these in with the room rental.  The bottom line, is that it's not always less expensive to have the back yard wedding, in some cases, it's more expensive.

6. Skimping on the food.   Yes food is a big cost.  Buffet or station style wedding doesn't mean your guests should be rationed portions of food. Nothing left for second helpings? Time to re-think the menu.

What it'll cost you: If you think your future mother-in-law can be a little unpleasant now, just wait until you see her on an empty stomach. Being short on food is a big etiquette no-no. Buffet style dinners are fine, but you need to make sure there is enough food, plates, and napkins to go around.  I've been told before by the brides parents that they feel that thefood is costing more than it should and they cut down on the food, only to run out and haveupset guests and fights and arguments on the day of the wedding.

How to avoid it: Work with your caterer ahead of time to make sure you have a menu that's within your budget but still allows you to have enough food for everyone. There's no excuse for adding filet mignon if it means you'll have a limited portion. Food is one place where it's best not to cut corners. Instead, try saving in other ways, like by throwing your wedding on a Sunday (cheaper than Saturday) or simply trimming down your guest list.

7. Doing Everything Yourself
High glamour wedding table
You've started planning a year ahead of time, so you'll definitely have time to do the bouquets, programs, seating cards, invitations, favors, welcome baskets, centerpieces, and guest book sounds plausible.

What it'll cost you: Slow down there super woman! Wanting to be involved -- really involved -- in planning your wedding is a great idea. Still, you'll want to keep yourself at least a little sane, and you may be surprised at how quickly those months can pass. You don't need the stress of pulling all-nighters the week before the wedding to finish too many projects. Then those projects that aren't done and must be done, that you take to the professionals at the last minute ... cost you double as a rush.

How to avoid it: It's simple: Don't bite off more than you can chew. Pick and choose your projects wisely, and be honest with yourself about how much time you have to devote to them. For instance, if you work a 40-hour workweek and want some free time on the weekends, do you really have the discipline to come home every night and work on a few projects? Keep a few DIY projects and leave the rest to the professionals from the beginning.

There's so many more things that can cost you dearly, these are just a few.

Wedding Planning Struggles

Contact us with your wedding planning struggles.  We have 21 years of hands on experience in the high end wedding industry.  We specifically plan & coordinate.  How can we help you to be less stressed, assist you with finding the vendors who fit your personality, style & budget or that location that you've been dreaming of.

It is not uncommon for brides to feel like they don't know what they want.  It can be overwhelming considering that the options, amount of pictures showing tons of variations of similar items, ideas, suggestions and Pintrest tripled the confusion.  The more brides look at Pintrest the more they change what they want and the price of their wedding triples too.

Having a professional to assist you in pulling all of your ideas, wish list ideas, and favorite pics so that it all makes sense is invaluable.

Candy Buffets

candy buffet, parties, event, wedding, Denver, Colorado, A Memory Lane Event
"To make it look gorgeous, start with the table, not the guest count.  You need 5 to 10 types of candy, and buy 15 to 20 pounds each, whether you actually need that much or not."   Like a Kid in a Candy Store!

Here's What to Buy
Okay, so now you have a handle on the numbers of quantity. Between the heaping bins at upscale food markets and the galaxies of candy choices online, which temptations do you choose? There aren't any hard-and-fast rules.  Like everything else in weddings, candy buffets are getting more & more personalized. It's the season's colors and themes that are driving clients' choices for the candies at the Candy Buffet Table.   However, for the best results, leave the building and eye pleasing to the professionals. But we need to know what you like in your candy.

Food and drink are some of the most important parts of your event - after all if they're well fed and have a great cocktail, they're sure to have a good time.  Everyone has experienced the event menu is usually either "rubbery chicken" or it's so good that guests can't stop talking about it. Your event caterer will probably be your largest expense, so you'll want them to be top-notch!

Start off by asking your event or wedding coordinator for suggestions or recommendations.  In most cases your event or reception site will have restrictions on which caterers they'll work with.

If your not working with caterers to ask about their availability and general price range. Once you've found a few who seem like they would work, make appointments, arranging to have both an interview asking the following questions and a tasting. That way, you'll know you're working with a professional, you'll avoid ugly surprises on the final bill, and your guests' taste buds will be happy.

Questions to ask your caterer.

  1. Given the style, time, and date of my event, what are some menu items that you suggest? What would the cost-per-person be?
  2. Do you have any particular style of food or special menu items that you specialize in?
  3. Could we provide a sentimental family favorite recipe to include in the menu?
  4. How many other events will your company handle that same weekend/day/hour?  (Depends upon the location)
  5. Are you licensed? (this means that they have met health department standards and have liability insurance)Do you have a liquor license?
  6. How does the cost-per-person of a buffet compare to that of a sit-down dinner?
  7. Does that cost-per-person just cover the food, or are charges such as staff, rentals, and linens included?
  8. What service costs are included and what costs are additional? Are set-up and clean-up included? How much is overtime if the reception runs long? Are gratuities included?
  9. Do you provide linens, glasses, plates, silverware, tables, chairs, serving pieces, and decorative flowers for trays? Would it cost less if I handled any or all of that myself?
  10. What color and style of linens, glasses, plates, and accessories are available?
  11. Will you be the person personally handling my wedding on my wedding day? If not, what is the name of the person who will, and when can I meet them?
  12. How much time will you need for set-up and clean-up?
  13. Can you provide a wedding cake, and possibly a grooms cake? If we provide them, do you charge a cake cutting and serving fee?
  14. Do you charge for beverage service?
  15. If we want to provide our own wine, champagne, and liquor, do you charge a corkage fee?
  16. Will you provide food for the photographer, videographer, musicians, and other "day-of" vendors? If so, is there an extra charge?
  17. Will you provide special meals for any children who attend, and is there a discounted charge for them?
  18. Can we see a copy of your standard contract?
  19. What deposit do you require to hold the date, and when will the rest of the money be due?
  20. Can we see pictures of previous events, and speak to former clients for referrals?

If you got a good feeling from the caterer, and think they might be a viable candidate, ask them to draw up an outline of what you discussed, including costs, menu possibilities, and what the fee includes. And don't forget about that tasting!

Cake: What is the in's and out's of cake?

Cake IS NOT CREATED EQUAL......

Looks amazing is not the same as tasting amazing.  Some bakeries have not been able to master looking amazing while tasting unbelievable.

Wedding cakes are the grand finale to a reception - so shouldn't they be breathtaking? Here is advice on how to find a wedding cake baker and questions you should ask. If you're interested in making your own wedding cake, or making one for another family member, check out the step-by-step guide to making and decorating a wedding cake. Before you visit a potential wedding cake baker or designer, print out this list of questions to ask. 1. Do you have a portfolio of previous wedding cakes you've made that we can look at?
  2. Will you be having a tasting soon that we can attend and try various kinds of wedding cake and cake fillings?
  3. Can you supply references?
  4. Will you do a custom wedding cake, or are there a set number of designs for us to choose from?
  5. How adaptable are wedding cake designs, especially due to budget concerns?
  6. Do you have or can you rent items like cake toppers, stands, tiers, fountains, and cutters? Will we be billed extra?
  7. If I want to use fresh flowers on my cake, will you coordinate with my florist, or will I have to manage getting the flowers to you?
  8. What ingredients do you typically use? What kind of icing do you use?
  9. (Better ingredients will cost more, but will make the cake taste better)
  10. How long before our wedding are the cakes prepared? How long does it take to make a cake? (The closer to your wedding that the cake is prepared, the better it will taste. BUT, anyone who tells you that they can bake a wedding cake in a day is not telling you the truth, or isn't being realistic. Due to the complicated nature of wedding cakes, they usually take between three and five days. )
  11. Are your wedding cakes priced by the slice? Is there an extra cost for special fillings or details? Will you charge extra for my design? Is there a price list I can take home with me to study?
  12. Can you give me a written proposal I can take home?

  14. Do you do deliver? How much does it cost? Will the delivery person be able to make emergency frosting or decoration repairs and arrange the cake table?
(For anything even slightly complicated, getting them to deliver is best. You won't want to be stuck with 150 ruined pieces of wedding cake at $8 per slice, much less on the morning of your wedding.)

When do you hire an Event or Wedding planner, consultant & coordinator?

A Memory Lane Event, Jennifer Lane, expert event and wedding planner, Denver CO
Jennifer Lane A Memory Lane Event
We know that many people and couples would like to be completely involved in their events & weddings.  So many people are confused as to what an Event or Wedding planner, consultant & coordinator does.  They think that we take control of their event or wedding and it's no longer theirs.

This is simply not true, at least when you work with a professional that keeps theirs clients wants, desire and goals in mind.  When you work with a professional, like A Memory Lane Event & Wedding,we have meetings where we discover what you as the client wants. You as the client make all of the decisions and we do the leg work and attend to details so you can have fun & enjoy the planning time. The best professionals book up quickly, hire a professional planner, consultant & coordinator sooner, rather then later.

So for what types of events do people hire a planner, consultant & coordinator?

  1. Weddings, all types, sizes & all locations .  Why spend 1000 hours trying to plan the most amazing wedding of the year, when you can hire a professional who already has the pull and network team around them to get to the best of the best for the most bang for your buck?
  2. Sweet 16's & Quincearna's.  Another opportunity to create the event of the year while giving your child the chance to be the envy of the socialite scene
  3.  Kids Parties for ages 10-18 .  Why? You want your kids to the envy of the neighborhood and their social network.  You also want the memory album to be chocked full of amazing  themes and memories that only a professional can pull off with out you having to do all the manpower hours to create the magical special occasion.  They'll only have that birthday once in their life.  You can't recreate it.
  4. Foundation Functions, Fundraisers & Galas .  You're going to the function for a couple reasons.  To give to a great cause, yes of course, but its also to be seen.  If your planning & decor is lacking it will be noticed.
  5. Anniversary Parties.  Your parents and your spouse and of course your self are worth the "extra mile" to ensure that your event is "The one of the Year" that leaves everyone talking about the dazzling memory and love that surrounded the day.  Don't take a chance by trying to pull this off as a DIY event.
  6. Engagement Parties .   This is your chance to show off the love of your life to all of the other important people in your life. Announcing your love and the excitement and happiness that you have decided to spend the rest of your life together. You would like them to share in the experience with you. It's the prelude to your wedding day.  Don't let it fall short, hire a professional, like A Memory Lane Event to assist you with the dazzling details, time & money savings while showcasing your love.
  7. Award ceremonies .  Those receiving the awards worked hard to get to achieve them and you are proud of them.  But you also want everyone else to know that they've done an amazing job.  Did you know that by hiring a professional, you get more buying power and can show the recipients how much their achievements really mean.
  8. Extravagant Theme Parties & Weddings that will become the Event or Wedding of the year that everyone wishes they could be invited to. Those parties, special occasions & weddings where you want to all out and do something that has never been seen before or is totally exclusive and  Media is beating down the door to come and cover. You simply can not do these by your self.  You must have the help and guidance of a professional with a team to handle all of the details.  Call A Memory Lane Event & Wedding.  Over the Top with a hint of secretive planning is our specialty.

Thoughts on Color Schemes for Your Wedding

From friends, family and especially from your wedding planner, one of the first questions you have to answer is “What is your color scheme?” Before you answer with the default colors of the season or those your mother has hinted at for the past few months, take a moment and give this decision some real thought.

Teal is an "it" color this year
Color is actually an extenuation of you and your personality. This decision of color and hue will affect almost everything involved in your special day. Invitations, flowers for the ceremony and reception, bridesmaids’ dresses, groomsmen’s’ tuxes, table clothes and favors, it all waits on this decision. Color helps create the mood, effects energy and definitely makes an impression. Just think about all the colors that exist in life. What colors will reflect the splash of personality that is unique to your relationship? Even if you decided to opt for the safe color of white or shades of pink, using a splash of color as an accent will really set your event apart.

What is the general rule of thumb regarding color? While color is a great accent, you don’t overdo it. For elegant style, use no more than three to four hues.

Options by the Season:

Fall – The earth shades of brown, green, orange, referred to as Harvest color are clichéd. To avoid looking to much in the Halloween mode, consider Taupe or Burgundy with copper or a hint of lavender

Spring - Is usually owned by pastels, (pink, blue, Gray/Silver) but consider bumping it up with a splash of plum or coral

Summer – Go for bold colors, which are definitely in. Rich yellow, bold reds or bright blues often dominate. You might want to think about using coral, salmon and a deep burnt orange as your color palate. It is flattering for almost every skin tone and is a stunning combination.

Winter – While all white is outstanding, consider accenting with pewter, silver, copper, or bronze for depth and warmth.

One last thought regarding color scheme, mixing different tones (light, medium, dark) of the same color creates a striking look.

Denver Audubon Society Birds Lullaby event

A Memory Lane Event will be working with the Audubon Society on a special evening at Chatfield, Saturday, September 11th. The Audubon Society goals are to enhance birds, other wildlife and their habitats. The Gulf Oil Spill has created a major challenge and a strain on the national Society resources. Here is some recent information on their response from their website.

“Audubon Gulf Oil Response”

“With a century-long legacy of conservation in the Gulf region, the Audubon Society was quick to respond to the crisis. Our Louisiana Coastal Restoration and Mississippi River Initiative staff were first on the scene, to assess the impacts and help guide and coordinate the emergency response. Shortly thereafter Audubon’s Oil Spill Volunteer Response Center opened its doors in Moss Point, Mississippi. The facility is a hub for a range of critical response activities, from assisting bird rehabilitation specialists to monitoring the spill’s impacts, to making nets, cages and other materials essential to bird rescue. Many are helping to assess the impacts of the spill on birds through the Coastal Bird Survey – a new program that will help guide and inform long term recovery efforts. Thanks to the our grassroots network of concerned Americans and the thousands of concerned people who contacted Audubon to volunteer, we are making a difference now – and will be able to continue to do so long into the future.”

“Locally, the Audubon Center site provides critical habitat for an abundance of plants and wildlife. Set alongside the South Platte River - an important wildlife corridor - the site offers visitors the chance to explore forests, shrublands, grasslands, ponds and wetland ecosystems. On a hike at the Audubon Center, you may chance upon mule deer grazing, prickly pear blooms drying in the sun, red-winged blackbirds singing loudly to defend territories or raccoon tracks left in the mud. Designated as an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society, the park boasts a list of 345 bird species that spend part of their year at Chatfield. More than 150 types of butterflies inhabit the site, along with a wide variety of plants and other wildlife.” Go to http://www.denveraudubon.com/ to view the website and learn more about their efforts.

Flowers & their seasons

Colorado weddings, A Memory Lane Event - Pink Posey
Picking event &/or wedding flowers in season can save you a bunch of money. Sure, growers are now able to fly almost anything in from the other side of the world, but you'll pay a premium for that. Here is a U,S. guide to what flowers are generally in season to help you get started. Talk specifically to your florist or floral designer about what is available.

This chart can also help you decide when to have your event or get married. If you want huge amounts of different pink flowers, fall might not be the best time for you to get married. On the other hand, if adore zinnias and dahlias, perhaps you should have a fall wedding.

Be sure to scroll down and see wedding flowers that are available year-round.
