Seven Tips for a Successful Surprise Party By: Katie Swift

Pulling off a successful surprise party requires stealth as well as organization and skills. Here are some tips to make yours successful!

1. Invite guests through phone or email so they guest of honor doesn’t stumble across the invitation by accident. Be sure to specify that it is a SURPRISE so no one spills the beans.

2. Choose a venue that won’t seem suspicious to the GOH (guest of honor). If possible, have guests park on side streets or behind the building.

3. Choose a dress code. Ask guests to dress in a similar way to the GOH. Your GOH will be uncomfortable if they arrive in sweatpants when everyone else is in cocktail attire.

4. If your venue is a restaurant, book surrounding tables for guests or book the private room. When you arrive with your GOH your “table for two” will be surrounded by friends.

5. Choose an accomplice! They can help distract the GOH, keep guests quiet or even take photos at the moment of surprise.

6. If possible, plan a fake party a week or two before or after to throw your GOH off the trail. If you’re celebrating a birthday, it’s best to have the surprise party before their birth date. No one likes to feel that their birthday has been forgotten.

 7. Be sure your GOH likes surprises!
