Wedding Dress Trends

Looking ahead to 2012…
The Spring/Summer wedding season is in full bloom and we are already looking ahead to what the trend in wedding dresses is going to be for the 2012 season. Brides, the wedding dress is one of the most important elements in your wedding. All eyes will be on you and you want the dress to accent your natural beauty. You don’t want to be looking back over the photo albums ten or twenty years later going “oh no what was I thinking!” Trends are great, we all love them, but they should be kept in moderation and used as more of guidelines. We all know what those outlandish dresses of the 80’s look like, and no one wants to be overtaken by their dress. Here in no particular order are some of the trends for the upcoming bridal season…

1.       Delightful Dots
With everything vintage and retro being such a hot trend right now, of course all the wedding dress designers would hop on board. Designers are embracing and loving this throwback look. Carolina Herrera, Stephanie James Couture, and even J Crew are just a
A few that have come out with dots in their designs. They are beautifully accented by sleek airy fabrics , such as organza, taffeta, and tulle.

2.       Illusion Necklines
The easy way to think if an illusion neckline is “strapless with coverage.” This is an easy way to transform a look that flaunts your assets, so to speak, into one that is tasteful. It adds a soft, romantic, elegance to the dress. This look can soften the shoulders and imparts sophistication and femininity. Most commonly it is a sheer overlay that extends past the neckline, veiling the skin that would otherwise be exposed.

3.       Multi Tiered Skirts
Why have one when you can have two? Multi tiered skirts are all the rage and designers are drawing all their attention to the hemlines. This look is flattering for all, and the top tier is a genius way to camouflage any unwanted hips. And who doesn’t want that?

4.       Volume, Volume, Volume!
Turning gowns inside out. Keeping with the focus on hemlines, designers are opting to add volume by using horsehair on the outside of dresses (not actual horsehair, it’s a synthetic fabric used in the underskirts of gowns).  The fabric is voluminous and adds great texture to the skirts of gowns, giving a new look to the old princess ballgown. This look can be done be done several ways, but the most popular is using it as a visible hemline, a extravagant bodice detail, or to give dimension to a ballgown. The horsehair adds a frothy, light as air, modern spin on traditional gowns.

5.       Sleeves
With the royal wedding all wrapped up, designers are taking queue from the future queen, and her stunning style choices. Most notably her simple yet beautiful wedding gown. Sleeves are back and we can’t be more excited, especially with the trend leaning towards lace sleeves. Lace by definition adds sophistication and a soft femininity to any look, and wedding gowns are no different. Lace sleeves create a delicate, and now a simply regal look, easily attained by anyone.

6.       Jackets
Don’t want sleeves? Bare shoulders are a no, and cap sleeves don’t flature you.  Well you’re in luck because jackets are the craze this upcoming season. Whether it be a shoulder cover wrap, a simple shawl, or a fun bolero jacket. They can enhance the overall gown making it look elegant in a dramatic fashion, creating an unforgettable look. It can also serve a practical use and keep the bride warm in cooler temperatures or even a use a fun fur for a winter wonderland wedding.

7.       Color Galore
Don’t dismiss this trend just yet, I know it sounds a little out there. For years your mother and grandmother have been telling you that it has to be a white dress, and the only exception to that would be a nice ivory or cream. But now blushes and soft pinks are making their way into the mix. This is not to say that you should go and pull a Sarah Jessica Parker and go completely avant guard with a black dress, this is your wedding not a funeral; and it’s not a costume party so don’t get to wild with the color. Like mom always said, keep it simple.

"Here's what we think will be haute this summer"

Outside Weddings by A Memory Lane Event, Denver
Backyard Weddings at Home While having an elegant event or getting married at home isn't less expensive, it feels more personal, allows you to have a more intimate affair. The economy means not only that people want to spend less money, but also can make them feel guilty when they do spend money. A backyard event not only helps to put your guests at ease, but also allows you to make more casual, less expensive choices elsewhere. For example, a BBQ picnic feels more appropriate at home than it would at a country club.  However, when you're having your event at home, there's a ton more things that need to be attended to, i.e. extra insurance, noise ordinances and all the extra expenses that you need to know.

Homemade Favors Though favors are an expense that's easy to eliminate, right now couples are especially grateful to guests who have incurred considerable expense to be a part of the celebration. The 2011 summer wedding trend is using homemade favors to express that thanks, and to send guests home with your love.

Birdcage Veils   These vintage-look veils combine a jeweled clip or feathered headpiece with netting that only covers the face.  Wearing one allows you to have some dramatic glamour and feel like a bride, but is a more fun look and less hassling than a long traditional veil.

Mismatched Bridesmaid Dresses For several years, brides have been selecting a bridesmaid dress designer and a fabric, then letting their bridesmaids choose the style that works best for their bodies. But the 2011 summer wedding trend takes idea further. Choose only a color, then let your bridesmaids find an off-the-rack dress of any designer that they like. Not only does this take some pressure off of you, but it also ensures that women are choosing a dress they like and they'll be likely to actually wear again. If you follow this trend, be sure to tell your bridesmaids how formal the dress should be – you don't want one bridesmaid wearing a casual sundress while another has on a beaded evening gown.

The End of the Standard Year-Long Engagement Though a year is a good amount of time for an engagement it certainly isn't obligatory. Some couples will be planning quick elopements, while others will opt for longer engagements. There are advantages to both – a quick engagement means that you don't overwhelm yourself with trying to plan the perfect wedding, and often means that you spend less money on unnecessary things. A long engagement can help relieve the stress, spreading out the tasks and the expenses. You'll have time to save money, and hopefully be able to feel more secure about your jobs before you sign unbreakable contracts.

Strapless Wedding Dresses If you're saying to yourself, "This isn't a new 2011 wedding trend!" you're right. Strapless dresses have been extremely popular for several years now. And though more brides are opting for sleeves, straps, and other ways of covering the shoulders, strapless is going to continue to be the dominant style for the near future as well as the corset and drop waist dress.
